More than a decade after redefining what an Assassin’s Creed game could be, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag returns in Black Flag Resynced, a modern restoration built to showcase Ubisoft’s pirate epic on current-generation hardware.
When the original launched in 2013, Ubisoft took a huge risk. Instead of focusing solely on hidden blades and crowded Renaissance streets, it handed players the wheel of the Jackdaw and set sail across the Caribbean. Against expectations, it became one of the most celebrated entries in the series.
Black Flag Resynced aims to preserve everything that made the original special while giving it the technical overhaul modern hardware deserves.
A Caribbean Rebuilt
The biggest improvement is visual.
The original Xbox release was limited by the hardware of its era, but Resynced transforms the Caribbean into a far richer world.
Crystal-clear tropical waters now shift naturally between shallow turquoise lagoons and deep ocean blues during storms. Modern global illumination creates convincing sunlight filtering through dense jungle canopies, while improved environmental detail gives Havana, Nassau and Kingston far greater atmosphere.
It feels less like revisiting an old game and more like rediscovering it.
Combat has also received subtle refinements. Sword fights feel more responsive, parries have greater impact and freerunning has been smoothed to reduce the frustrating wall-climbing moments long-time Assassin’s Creed players will remember.
Performance
Current-generation consoles offer several graphics options.
For players with a 120Hz display and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Balanced Mode delivers the best overall experience.
The combination of smoother gameplay and enhanced lighting makes sailing, combat and exploration feel considerably more immersive without sacrificing too much responsiveness.
Not Everything Has Aged Gracefully
Despite the technical improvements, Black Flag still carries some of its original design limitations.
The biggest issue remains the repeated tailing and eavesdropping missions.
These slower sections interrupt the game’s natural rhythm, forcing players away from the freedom of the open sea and back into restrictive scripted sequences that feel dated by modern standards.
Some close-up facial animations also reveal the game’s age. While character textures and lighting have improved dramatically, animation quality occasionally struggles to match the beautifully upgraded environments.
The Jackdaw Still Steals the Show
Where Black Flag continues to excel is its naval gameplay.
Commanding the Jackdaw remains one of the finest gameplay loops Ubisoft has ever created.
Spotting an enemy Man-o’-War on the horizon, positioning for the perfect broadside, disabling its masts with chain shot before boarding with your crew still delivers some of the most satisfying moments in the franchise.
The seamless transition between sailing, naval combat, boarding actions and island exploration keeps the adventure flowing naturally and remains remarkably impressive today.

After two days with Black Flag Resynced, it’s clear this is the definitive way to experience Edward Kenway’s pirate adventure.
The technical upgrades modernise the experience without compromising what made the original so memorable. While some mission design inevitably shows its age, the Caribbean remains one of Ubisoft’s greatest open worlds, and commanding the Jackdaw is just as exhilarating as ever.
For returning fans, this is the definitive way to revisit Edward Kenway’s adventure.
