Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has been handed a three-place grid penalty for Sunday’s 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix after FIA stewards ruled that he failed to slow sufficiently under yellow flags during qualifying.
The decision follows a post-session investigation into Antonelli’s actions during the closing stages of Q3 and marks the second significant grid penalty issued after qualifying, following Lewis Hamilton’s earlier sanction.
The penalty reshuffles the starting order ahead of Sunday’s race and presents another challenge for Mercedes at a circuit where overtaking opportunities are notoriously limited.
Why Was Antonelli Penalised?
The incident occurred during the final phase of qualifying when yellow flags were displayed after an on-track incident.
Under Formula 1 sporting regulations, drivers are required to reduce speed immediately when yellow flags are shown, demonstrating that they are prepared to change direction or stop if necessary.
Although Antonelli lifted off the throttle, the FIA stewards concluded that his reduction in speed was insufficient to satisfy the requirements of the regulations.
After reviewing telemetry, onboard footage and other available evidence, the stewards determined that a breach had occurred and imposed the standard three-place grid penalty.
Antonelli was also issued one penalty point on his FIA Super Licence.
Another Blow for Mercedes
The penalty is a frustrating setback for Mercedes following a competitive qualifying session.
Instead of starting from his original qualifying position, Antonelli will now begin Sunday’s race three places further back, making the task of fighting at the front considerably more difficult around the tight and technical Hungaroring.
Track position has historically played a crucial role at the Budapest circuit, with limited overtaking opportunities placing even greater importance on qualifying performance.
FIA Continues Strict Yellow Flag Enforcement
The FIA has consistently adopted a firm stance on yellow flag infringements, treating them as an important safety issue.
Drivers are expected to react immediately whenever yellow flags are displayed, regardless of whether the incident appears to affect their lap directly.
Stewards determined that Antonelli’s actions did not meet the required standard, resulting in the automatic three-place grid penalty.
