Dolby Vision 2 Could Come to Existing 4K Blu-ray Players — But There’s a Catch

Dolby Vision 2 could work with existing 4K Blu-ray players through firmware updates, but whether owners actually receive support will depend on manufacturers.

Dolby Vision 2 is beginning to reach living rooms, but one of the most interesting developments is not about buying a new television. Dolby Vision 2, the company’s next-generation HDR system, can potentially work with existing 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players through a firmware update.

That sounds like excellent news for home-cinema enthusiasts who have invested in a good disc player. The catch is significant, though: technical compatibility does not guarantee that manufacturers will actually release the required updates.

What is Dolby Vision 2?

Dolby Vision 2 is the next generation of Dolby’s dynamic HDR platform. Rather than simply chasing higher peak brightness, it introduces a new image engine and a collection of features designed to make better use of modern displays while preserving creative intent.

Dolby calls one of the central elements Content Intelligence. It uses information about the content and the capabilities of the display to adapt presentation more intelligently. Dolby has also introduced an intensity control intended to compensate for contrast lost through viewing angles or reflections.

The format is now rolling out on selected 2026 Hisense televisions, including models in the UX, UR9, UR8 and U7 families, depending on region. Dolby says existing Dolby Vision material can also benefit from the newer processing engine, even before large libraries of content specifically using Dolby Vision 2 features arrive.

Why existing Blu-ray players may be able to support it

The encouraging part for physical-media owners is that a completely new generation of disc players is not necessarily required.

Dolby executives have explained that existing UHD Blu-ray hardware can potentially handle Dolby Vision 2 because much of the sophisticated picture processing happens at the television. The player principally needs to recognise, correctly configure and pass the relevant information through the HDMI chain. That means compatible players could potentially gain the necessary behaviour through software rather than requiring owners to replace perfectly capable hardware.

The catch: manufacturers have to provide the update

This is where the promising technical story becomes much less certain.

A player being capable of supporting Dolby Vision 2 does not mean it automatically will. Manufacturers would need to work with Dolby and issue the appropriate firmware for individual models.

Sony has already told TechRadar that it does not currently plan to provide a Dolby Vision 2 firmware update for its existing Blu-ray player range. At the time of writing, similarly firm commitments have not emerged from other major specialist player manufacturers.

That leaves owners in an unusual position: the hardware sitting underneath their television may be technically capable of doing the job, but its future functionality could depend entirely on whether its manufacturer considers another firmware release worthwhile.

Do you actually need Dolby Vision 2 for your discs?

Probably not yet — and that is an important distinction.

A current Dolby Vision-capable 4K Blu-ray setup does not suddenly become obsolete because Dolby Vision 2 exists. Existing discs will continue to use the formats in which they were authored, and a Dolby Vision 2 television can apply its newer processing to existing Dolby Vision material. The more interesting question concerns future discs that make use of Dolby Vision 2-specific capabilities. That is where player firmware support could become important, and where differences between otherwise capable UHD players may eventually emerge.

Physical media still has an important advantage

The discussion also highlights something that often gets overlooked as streaming platforms adopt new picture technologies first: UHD Blu-ray remains an extremely strong home-cinema format.

Streaming is convenient and increasingly sophisticated, but compression and available bandwidth still matter. A well-mastered 4K Blu-ray can deliver substantially higher video bitrates alongside lossless or high-quality immersive audio, which is why dedicated discs remain attractive to enthusiasts with larger televisions, projectors and capable sound systems. Dolby Vision 2 therefore presents an interesting opportunity. If manufacturers support existing players, physical-media enthusiasts could gain access to the next generation of HDR without another hardware replacement cycle. Should you upgrade your Blu-ray player?

There is little reason to replace a good 4K Blu-ray player purely for Dolby Vision 2 today.

The television rollout is still in its early stages, content exploiting the new capabilities remains limited, and support from player manufacturers is far from settled. Anyone considering an expensive new UHD player would be better served by choosing it for the things that matter now — reliable disc playback, HDR10 and Dolby Vision handling, HDMI compatibility, build quality and audio support — rather than buying on the promise of future Dolby Vision 2 compatibility.

Tech Torque Verdict

Dolby Vision 2 potentially working on existing 4K Blu-ray players is exactly the kind of backwards-compatible technology we like to see. Owners should not need to replace expensive hardware simply because an HDR standard has evolved.

Unfortunately, the technical possibility is only half of the equation. If manufacturers decide that older players are not worth updating, Dolby Vision 2 support could become another feature used to encourage new hardware purchases despite existing devices being capable of handling it.

For now, keep the 4K Blu-ray player you already have. Dolby Vision 2 is worth watching, but it is nowhere near a compelling reason to replace a good physical-media setup.
