F1 Teams Back Plan to Shorten Grand Prix Races to 290km in 2027

Formula 1 teams have backed plans to shorten Grand Prix races from around 305km to 290km in 2027 as revised power-unit rules increase fuel demands.

Formula 1 teams have backed plans to shorten standard Grand Prix distances from around 305km to 290km in 2027, as the sport continues to revise the power-unit regulations introduced this season.

The change would trim approximately 15km from most races — typically equivalent to around two or three laps — but the reasoning behind it is more significant than simply creating shorter Grands Prix.

Formula 1 is changing the balance between combustion and electrical power for 2027, increasing both internal-combustion-engine output and fuel flow in an attempt to address some of the energy-management compromises exposed during the first season of the new regulations. That creates a straightforward problem: the cars will require more fuel to complete the same race distance.

Rather than forcing teams to significantly increase fuel capacity, the preferred solution is now to reduce how far each Grand Prix runs.

Why Formula 1 needs shorter races

The 2026 regulations dramatically increased the contribution made by electrical power, but the FIA and Formula 1 have already agreed to progressively shift the balance back towards the internal-combustion engine.

Official figures published by Formula 1 show the ICE/MGU-K power split moving from 53:47 in 2026 to 58:42 in 2027, before reaching 60:40 in 2028. ICE maximum power is also scheduled to rise from 400kW this year to 420kW in 2027, while fuel flow increases by 5%. At the same time, normal MGU-K maximum power falls from 350kW to 300kW. Those revisions form part of a wider attempt to improve the behaviour of the current generation of cars. The FIA said the changes were intended to address concerns around energy management and fuel-energy flow while allowing drivers to push harder.

But increasing the combustion engine’s contribution inevitably increases fuel demand.

Teams could theoretically solve that by carrying more fuel, but larger tanks introduce additional weight and packaging compromises. Some teams had also developed their 2027 programmes around existing fuel-capacity assumptions.

Reducing the race distance therefore provides another route: make the cars travel less distance rather than requiring them to carry considerably more fuel.

Why every Grand Prix could change

Earlier discussions had focused on shortening only the circuits expected to be most challenging for fuel consumption.

That approach carried its own problems. If certain Grands Prix retained the traditional distance while others became shorter, the most fuel-sensitive events risked turning into exaggerated fuel-management exercises. Drivers potentially saving fuel rather than racing flat-out would undermine much of the reason Formula 1 is modifying its power-unit rules in the first place.

The solution backed by teams is therefore a common 290km standard across the championship, according to The Race.

Formula 1 currently defines most Grands Prix as the minimum number of complete laps required to exceed 305km. Monaco is already treated separately and runs to approximately 260km.

Reports differ slightly on exactly what happens to Monaco under the latest proposal, so its eventual 2027 distance should be treated as unresolved until the sporting regulations are finalised. Motorsport.com has reported on the wider proposal and its implications.

What would 290km mean at Monza?

The timing of the proposal provides an interesting example during this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

Monza measures 5.793km and the current Grand Prix runs for 53 laps, covering 306.72km. If a 290km minimum were applied to the same circuit layout, the Italian Grand Prix would require 51 laps rather than 53 to exceed that distance.

That gives a better sense of the scale of the proposal. Fans are not suddenly looking at dramatically shorter races. At most circuits the difference should amount to only a few minutes, although those missing laps could still alter tyre strategy, fuel targets and the amount of time available for late-race tactical moves.

This is not yet the final 2027 rule

There is an important distinction between the wider 2027 power-unit changes and this latest race-distance proposal.

The FIA World Motor Sport Council has already ratified a broader package of 2027 and 2028 regulation changes, including the revised power-unit balance and measures relating to race operations and race distances at selected circuits. The newly reported blanket 290km distance, however, still has to complete the formal regulatory process.

The proposal is expected to go through the F1 Commission before being submitted for World Motor Sport Council ratification. Until that process is complete and revised sporting regulations are published, 290km should be regarded as a team-backed proposal rather than a final rule.

Losing around 15km from a Grand Prix will inevitably concern fans who value Formula 1’s traditional race format, but the practical reduction is relatively small.

The more revealing part of this story is why the change is necessary.

Formula 1 has already had to evolve the power-unit regulations introduced in 2026, and increasing combustion-engine contribution creates consequences elsewhere in the car. Race distance, fuel capacity, weight and energy deployment are all connected.

If the choice is between losing two or three laps and watching drivers spend considerably more time managing fuel simply to reach the chequered flag, the shorter distance is arguably the cleaner compromise.

But it also underlines how much development is still taking place around Formula 1’s new technical era only one season after it began.
