Audi has revived the A2 name for a new compact electric car, with three battery sizes, four power outputs, bidirectional charging and a claimed WLTP range of up to 646km (401 miles).
The new Audi A2 e-tron has made its production debut, bringing back one of the German brand’s most distinctive nameplates as the new entry point to its fully electric range.
This is no longer a preview or design study. Audi has now published the production specification, confirming three battery capacities, four rear-wheel-drive power outputs and a clear focus on efficiency rather than simply increasing battery size.
For UK buyers, Audi currently lists a WLTP range of up to 397 miles, with final UK model-specific figures, pricing and equipment still to be confirmed. Audi UK also says order books are expected to open during October 2026, with first customer cars due in early 2027.
The Audi A2 name makes sense again
The original Audi A2 was unusual from the start. Audi’s own history of the A2 records how the compact model combined an aluminium body structure, distinctive packaging and an efficiency-led approach that made it stand apart from conventional small premium cars.
That philosophy is central to the new A2 e-tron too. Audi says the car has a drag coefficient of 0.24, while the most efficient version consumes as little as 12.8kWh/100km under WLTP testing. According to Audi, that makes it the most efficient series-production model in the company’s history.
Importantly, the headline efficiency figure and maximum range figure come from different versions of the car. The 12.8kWh/100km figure belongs to the 140kW model with the optional efficiency package, while the longest-range 646km figure comes from the 170kW version with the largest battery.
Three batteries and four power outputs
Audi will offer the A2 e-tron with 52kWh, 61kWh and 84kWh gross-capacity batteries.
The 52kWh and 61kWh packs use lithium-iron-phosphate, or LFP, cells in a cell-to-pack design. The larger 84kWh battery uses nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry and is reserved for the 170kW and 240kW versions.

Audi quotes 10–80 per cent DC charging times of 24 minutes for the 52kWh battery, 26 minutes for the 61kWh pack and 29 minutes for the 84kWh versions.
All four versions use rear-wheel drive and a permanently excited synchronous motor. Power runs from 125kW and 350Nm in the entry model to 240kW and 545Nm in the range-topping version.
UK range is now listed at up to 397 miles
Audi UK’s A2 e-tron page currently lists a driving range of up to 397 miles under WLTP testing. It also confirms LFP battery technology, bidirectional charging capability and the A2 e-tron’s position as Audi’s compact electric entry model.
The global specification stretches as far as 646km, or around 401 miles, but UK buyers should wait for final derivative-specific homologation figures before assuming every global specification will be offered here unchanged.
Audi UK says order books will open during October 2026 and first cars are expected to reach customers in early 2027. UK pricing has not yet been confirmed. For context, Audi says the A2 e-tron will start from €38,200 in Germany, where orders open on 10 September and the first vehicles are due at Audi partners from December 2026.
Bidirectional charging adds another layer
The A2 e-tron also supports bidirectional charging. Vehicle-to-Load allows the high-voltage battery to power external equipment, while Vehicle-to-Home can turn the car into a temporary home energy store when used with compatible equipment.
Audi’s global technical release currently specifies compatible V2H operation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, so the precise UK hardware and installation requirements still need clarification. The technology nevertheless points towards a future in which an EV battery can play a more active role in household energy management.

Compact outside, practical inside
The A2 e-tron has a 2.77-metre wheelbase and offers 396 litres of luggage space, expanding to 1,336 litres with the rear seats folded. The higher-powered versions also gain a 13-litre front storage compartment.
Inside, Audi fits an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit and 12.8-inch MMI touchscreen as standard, alongside the Audi assistant with artificial intelligence and the e-tron route planner.

Tech Torque Verdict
The most interesting part of the A2 e-tron is not simply the return of a familiar badge.
Audi appears to have returned to the philosophy that made the original A2 unusual in the first place: use less energy, package the car intelligently and make efficiency part of the engineering brief rather than relying only on a bigger battery.
A potential 401-mile maximum range will attract attention, but the 12.8kWh/100km version could prove just as significant. If figures close to that translate into real-world driving, the A2 e-tron could demonstrate that useful electric range does not have to come from ever larger and heavier cars.
The biggest unanswered question for UK buyers is price. Audi has now given us the production car and its core technical specification, but until UK pricing and the final market-specific model line-up are announced, we cannot yet judge whether the new A2 will make premium electric motoring meaningfully more accessible.
