Is Your LG Smart TV Listening? What the New Privacy Investigation Actually Found

A major investigation into LG smart TVs raises questions over network scanning, ACR and voice data. Here’s what researchers found, LG’s response and the privacy settings owners can check.

A new investigation into LG Smart TV privacy has raised serious questions about how much information a modern television can collect about the home around it — from viewing habits and nearby devices to voice data. But the most alarming claims need careful context: the research does not show that every LG TV is secretly recording every conversation.

The investigation, published by Gamers Nexus with Level1Techs and independent security researchers, examined LG webOS televisions using network traffic analysis, firmware inspection and security testing. Researchers reported extensive local-network discovery, Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) activity and potentially sensitive voice-related behaviour.

LG disputes the suggestion that its televisions routinely record ambient conversations. The company says voice recognition is optional, that wake-word detection is processed locally when the feature is enabled, and that audio which does not trigger the wake word is promptly deleted rather than sent to LG servers.

What did the LG TV investigation find?

One of the clearest findings concerns network discovery. Researchers said LG televisions were able to scan a local network and identify other devices, including phones, smartwatches and other connected hardware that had not been paired directly with the TV.

Ars Technica reported that testing included LG OLED models and packet captures showing network scanning. LG confirmed that its TVs can scan for compatible devices on the same network, describing this as functionality used for device connectivity, content sharing and smart-home features.

The researchers also reported visibility of information such as IP addresses, nearby Wi-Fi network names, signal strengths and other network data. The important distinction is that the ability to discover devices on a network is not, by itself, evidence that all of that information is being transmitted to LG or used for advertising. The investigation nevertheless raises legitimate questions about how much data an internet-connected television can technically observe inside a home.

What is ACR and why does it matter?

Automatic Content Recognition is technology used by many smart-TV platforms to identify what is being shown on the screen. It can create a digital fingerprint of programmes, adverts or other content and match that against reference data.

That can support recommendations, measurement and personalised advertising, but it also means the television may be capable of identifying viewing activity beyond a single streaming app. Some LG specifications have explicitly described Live Plus as an “ACR-based” service.

LG says its ACR feature is provided on an opt-in basis and that ACR data is not used for advertising if the user does not consent to the relevant optional agreement. That makes the privacy choices presented during setup — and any agreements accepted later — particularly important.

Can an LG TV listen while it appears to be switched off?

This is the part of the investigation most likely to generate alarming headlines, but it also needs the most qualification.

Researchers demonstrated that voice audio could be captured around an LG television, including while the display appeared to be off or in standby, and said locally stored material could remain available while the set was offline. Separate reporting on the research says the most serious microphone demonstration involved security vulnerabilities on a compromised television, with remote-code-execution issues also being handled through a responsible-disclosure process.

That does not establish that every LG television routinely records conversations while it is switched off.

LG says its TVs only process voice data when the voice button on the remote is pressed and held, or when an enabled Far-Field voice-recognition system recognises a wake word such as “Hi LG”. If no wake word is detected, LG says the wake-word audio is processed locally, deleted and not transmitted to its servers.

There is also an important difference between a television being fully powered down and being in a connected standby mode. LG’s own support documentation confirms that supported models can respond to “Hi LG” and be turned on by voice while the screen is off, provided Direct Voice Recognition and the required standby features are enabled.

What does LG say?

LG has rejected the broader suggestion that its televisions continuously collect or record ambient conversations. In statements supplied to technology publications following the investigation, the company said voice data is processed only after intentional activation through the remote or an enabled wake word.

LG also says local-network scanning is a standard smart-TV function designed to find compatible devices for features such as content sharing and smart-home connectivity. On ACR, the company says use for personalised services and advertising is subject to an optional agreement.

Those explanations address some of the normal platform behaviour, but they do not make the security findings irrelevant. A device that can access microphones, identify other hardware and sit permanently connected to a home network deserves the same security attention as other connected computers — especially if researchers have identified vulnerabilities capable of expanding that access.

What LG TV owners can check now

There is no evidence here that every LG owner should immediately disconnect their television, but it is a good opportunity to review features that may have been enabled during setup and forgotten about.

  • Review voice recognition. On supported webOS models, look under All Settings → General → AI Service → Voice Recognition Settings. Menu names can vary by model and webOS version. Disable hands-free or Direct Voice Recognition if you do not use it.
  • Review optional privacy agreements. Check the TV’s Privacy, Terms or User Agreements area and reconsider optional viewing-information, personalised-advertising or ACR permissions you do not need.   • Check Always Ready or Quick Start features. These can keep supported functions available while the screen appears off. If you do not need voice wake-up or connected standby features, consider disabling them.
  • Keep webOS updated. Security fixes are one of the strongest reasons to keep a connected TV on current firmware.
  • Consider network separation. More privacy-conscious owners can place smart-home devices on a guest or dedicated IoT network so they are separated from laptops, phones and other sensitive devices.

Tech Torque Verdict

The most useful takeaway from this investigation is not that every LG television is secretly recording its owner. The evidence is more nuanced — and arguably more important.

Modern smart TVs are networked computers with advertising systems, microphones on some models, device-discovery features and detailed knowledge of what appears on their screens. LG’s explanations show that some of the behaviour highlighted by researchers has legitimate smart-TV purposes, while the security findings demonstrate why those capabilities still deserve scrutiny.

For owners, the sensible response is to understand which features are switched on, disable the ones you do not use and keep the television updated. For manufacturers, the bigger challenge is transparency: privacy controls should be easy to understand, easy to find and clear about what information a television can collect inside the home.
