Apple has released iOS 27 in the UK, bringing the company’s biggest iPhone software update of the year to compatible devices from 14 September. Alongside the wider system changes, Apple has also begun rolling out Siri AI in English, marking the first public phase of the more capable assistant announced earlier this year.
The update goes well beyond a visual refresh. iOS 27 combines performance changes, new child-safety controls, expanded Apple Intelligence features and a redesigned Siri experience that can understand more natural requests, draw on personal context and take actions across supported apps.
Siri AI is the headline upgrade
Apple says Siri AI is now rolling out in English on supported devices. The new assistant is powered by Apple Intelligence and is designed to handle more conversational requests, maintain context across a discussion and answer broader questions using information from the web.
Personal-context awareness is one of the biggest changes. Siri can search information already on your iPhone, such as messages, emails, photos and notes, to help answer a question without you having to remember exactly where that information was stored.
Apple is also expanding app actions. Siri AI can carry out supported tasks in apps such as Messages, Music and Reminders, while a new dedicated Siri app keeps conversations together so they can be revisited later.
There is also a new Siri mode in Camera, which works with Visual Intelligence to answer questions about what the camera can see. Writing tools have been expanded too, allowing Siri to draft text or provide feedback in places where you can type.
Apple has also published a short official video demonstrating how Siri AI and the new Apple Intelligence features work across iPhone, including writing tools, image features and privacy-focused processing.
Not every iPhone that gets iOS 27 gets Siri AI
This is an important distinction. iOS 27 itself supports a much wider range of iPhones, including the iPhone 11 family and iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later. Siri AI and the newer Apple Intelligence features require newer hardware.
Apple lists iPhone 16 models or later, plus the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as supported for Siri AI and the next generation of Apple Intelligence. That means owners of older compatible iPhones can install iOS 27 without gaining the full AI feature set.
Apple Intelligence expands across everyday apps
Beyond Siri, Apple Intelligence is being pushed deeper into the apps people use every day. Photos gains stronger editing tools including Spatial Reframing, an Extend option and an upgraded Clean Up tool, while Image Playground can create and transform images from a written description.
Messages and Mail can surface suggested actions based on the context of a conversation, while Safari gains automatic tab grouping and a Notify Me feature that can monitor pages for changes such as price drops or stock returning.
Apple says usage limits may apply to Siri AI. Some Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-based models, including image generation, also have daily usage limits, with increased access included on most iCloud+ plans. Apple has not published a single fixed Siri AI allowance for UK users, so the practical limits may vary by feature.
Performance and Liquid Glass have been refined
Apple has continued refining the Liquid Glass design introduced across its platforms. iOS 27 adds improved contrast and more uniform refraction, while users can adjust how transparent or tinted the interface appears.
There are performance changes underneath as well. Apple claims apps can launch up to 30% faster, new photos can load in the Photos library up to 70% faster and AirDrop transfers can be up to 80% faster. As usual with manufacturer performance figures, real-world gains will vary by device and workload.
New child-safety controls are a major part of iOS 27
Apple has also rebuilt parts of its parental-control system. Parents can choose which system apps are available during setup, approve new websites through Ask to Browse and set Time Allowances across categories such as games, entertainment and social media. The changes arrive as Apple and Google also face new UK pressure over smartphone child-safety protections.
Communication Safety has also been expanded. Apple says it can now intervene before children view graphic violence or gore in shared images and videos, in addition to existing protections around nudity.

What about CarPlay?

Now that iOS 27 is public, the more useful question is how those changes behave day to day rather than what appeared in individual betas. That is where the update should become more interesting for drivers over the coming weeks.
Tech Torque Verdict
iOS 27 is a significant update even before Siri AI reaches its full potential. The practical improvements to performance, Photos, Safari, parental controls and CarPlay give the release substance beyond the AI headline.
Siri AI is still the part to watch most closely. Apple is finally pushing the assistant towards the kind of contextual, conversational experience users have been waiting for, but the staged rollout, hardware requirements and unspecified usage limits mean the finished picture will take time to emerge.
