Formula 1’s first race at Madring delivered a striking venue, a demanding lap and plenty of strategic tension — but it also exposed the new Spanish Grand Prix circuit’s biggest weakness. Overtaking was simply too difficult.
Kimi Antonelli ultimately won Sunday’s race ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, but the result was shaped as much by pit-stop timing and a Virtual Safety Car as by racing on the circuit itself. As we covered in our Spanish Grand Prix race report, Norris had controlled the opening phase from pole before the timing of the VSC turned the order on its head.
That should not overshadow what Madring did well. As our Friday practice roundup showed, drivers praised the challenge of the new 5.414km layout, while its mix of fast corners, walls, elevation changes and the banked La Monumental section gave it a distinct character. But a circuit can be entertaining to drive and still struggle to produce good racing. On Sunday, that distinction became impossible to ignore.
The warning signs were there before the race
Concerns over overtaking were not a reaction to a quiet Grand Prix. They had already been raised after qualifying, as our Saturday Madring roundup noted before the race.
Max Verstappen was particularly sceptical, telling reporters that there were few obvious places to pass and suggesting that tyre degradation might be the main route to creating position changes. Reuters reported his concerns before the race, while other drivers also pointed to the circuit’s combined braking zones and long pit lane as potential complications.
Those fears proved well founded. Once the field settled, drivers could follow but rarely get close enough in the right place to complete a move. Norris spent the final phase of the race behind Verstappen despite having shown strong pace earlier, and the battle for second became more about maintaining pressure than creating a realistic passing opportunity.
Why Madring made passing so difficult
Madring is not short of speed. The problem is where that speed leads.
Several of the main braking areas arrive while the car is already turning or positioning itself for the next sequence. That makes the classic Formula 1 overtaking move — a strong tow followed by late braking into a slow corner — harder to execute cleanly.
The circuit also arrived in the first season of Formula 1’s new 2026 overtaking system. DRS has gone, replaced by active aerodynamics and Overtake Mode. Formula 1’s 2026 regulations guide explains that Overtake Mode gives a chasing driver additional electrical deployment when the car is within one second at the detection point, with the benefit intended to be most effective on longer straights.
That assistance can help a driver close, but it cannot create a braking opportunity that the layout does not offer. Madring’s debut showed that the quality of the corner at the end of a straight still matters just as much as the speed available on the straight itself.
Norris’s VSC setback exposed the second problem
The lack of overtaking became even more significant because the race was decided by a strategic interruption rather than an on-track fight.
Norris had already passed the pit entry when the Virtual Safety Car was deployed. That allowed rivals behind him to take advantage of the reduced time loss while he had to continue around the circuit before stopping. By the time McLaren completed the stop, the advantage he had built at the front had effectively disappeared.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella later said there had been “no option to retain the lead”, explaining that the timing of the VSC left Norris caught between the pit entry and the end of the neutralisation. By Monday, Norris had gone further. Reuters reported that he wants changes to both the VSC procedure and parts of the Madring layout, singling out Turns 18 and 19 while arguing that the rules should be reviewed so one driver is not disproportionately disadvantaged by the timing of a neutralisation.
There is always an element of luck in Safety Car and VSC timing, and Norris himself acknowledged that drivers can benefit from it as well as lose out. The bigger issue at Madring was what happened afterwards: once track position had changed, the circuit offered very little chance to undo it through racing.
A good circuit to drive still needs to race well
This is where the first Madring weekend produced a mixed verdict.
Friday running suggested drivers enjoyed the challenge. Formula 1’s own post-practice review highlighted positive reactions to the circuit’s speed, precision and commitment. The venue also delivered a distinctive visual identity rather than feeling like a copy of an existing track.
None of that should be dismissed. A new circuit does not need to be condemned after a single Grand Prix, and one race is too small a sample to judge every strategic or sporting outcome. But the overtaking problem is more fundamental than a lack of first-year polish because drivers predicted it before Sunday and then experienced it during the race.
What could Formula 1 learn before Madring returns?
The answer does not necessarily require a wholesale redesign.
Formula 1 and the circuit organisers now have a full weekend of real-world data showing where cars could follow, where the gaps opened and where drivers were unable to convert a run into a move. Norris has called for changes, but no revisions to the circuit or VSC procedure have been confirmed. The immediate task is to review the race data and driver feedback before deciding whether any changes are justified.
Driver input should be part of that review. Verstappen argued before the race that drivers should have more involvement in future circuit design, and Madring provides a useful case study for why. Simulation can predict speeds and loads, but twenty-two Formula 1 cars racing in traffic will expose weaknesses that a single-car model cannot fully replicate.
The long pit lane also deserves scrutiny. Autosport reported ahead of the race that its time loss favoured a one-stop strategy despite tyre degradation that might otherwise have encouraged greater variation. On a circuit where passing is already difficult, discouraging alternative pit strategies only increases the value of track position.
Tech Torque Verdict
Madring’s first Formula 1 weekend was not a failure. The circuit looked distinctive, challenged the drivers and gave Madrid a credible modern Grand Prix venue. But Sunday exposed a racing problem that Formula 1 should address rather than explain away as first-year teething trouble.
The key lesson is simple: a circuit can be spectacular to drive without being easy to race on.
With the 2026 cars specifically designed around new tools intended to improve overtaking, Madring should offer more than strategic position changes followed by long periods where the order is difficult to alter. The encouraging part is that the problem is now visible, measurable and backed by driver feedback.
Formula 1 does not need to abandon what makes Madring distinctive. It needs to make sure those distinctive features produce a better race next time.
