Capcom’s return to Onimusha has delivered an immediate commercial result, with Way of the Sword selling more than one million copies worldwide on its first day and pushing the long-running franchise beyond 10 million sales overall.

The first official Onimusha: Way of the Sword sales figures give Capcom a clear indication that bringing the series back was worth the wait.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold more than one million copies worldwide on its launch day, according to figures released by Capcom on Monday. The result has also taken cumulative sales across the Onimusha franchise beyond 10 million units.

For a franchise returning after such a long absence, that is an unusually decisive opening statement.

One million sales after more than 20 years away

Way of the Sword launched on 4 September 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

It represents the first entirely new Onimusha instalment in more than 20 years, bringing Capcom’s supernatural swordplay series back with a new adventure centred on Miyamoto Musashi and set in Edo-period Kyoto.

That lengthy absence makes the first-day figure particularly significant.

Reviving an established name can generate attention, but nostalgia alone does not guarantee modern players will actually buy the finished game. Passing one million units within the opening day suggests Capcom has successfully reached beyond the existing Onimusha fanbase.

Capcom says pre-release demos, hands-on exhibitions and other promotional activity were used to build awareness before launch. Those efforts now appear to have converted into genuine sales rather than simply pre-release interest.

Gamescom gave Capcom an early indication

The result also follows an encouraging Gamescom for the game.

As we covered in our Gamescom 2026 wrap-up, Onimusha: Way of the Sword collected both Best Gameplay and Best Sony PlayStation Game at the Gamescom Awards shortly before release.

Capcom confirmed those awards on 31 August, highlighting the game’s sword-based combat and overall gameplay experience.

There is an interesting sales comparison here too. At the time of that announcement, Capcom said the entire Onimusha series had sold more than 9.2 million copies as of 30 June 2026.

Following the launch of Way of the Sword, that total has already passed 10 million.

The new game’s one-million-plus opening therefore represents a substantial addition to the lifetime performance of a franchise that began back in 2001.

Capcom’s dormant-IP strategy gets an early win

The significance goes beyond Onimusha itself.

Capcom specifically used its latest announcement to highlight its strategy of reactivating intellectual properties that have gone without a new release for an extended period.

That makes Way of the Sword something of a commercial test case.

Publishers have enormous back catalogues filled with recognisable franchises, but bringing one back involves considerably more than remastering an older game. A completely new instalment requires modern development budgets, marketing and the confidence that enough players still care about the name.

One million sales on day one does not tell us how Way of the Sword will perform over its full lifetime, but it substantially reduces the uncertainty around whether there was still a meaningful market for a new Onimusha.

The answer, at least initially, appears to be yes.

A revival that has already delivered

There will be more useful milestones to watch from here.

Long-term sales, player retention and whether Capcom continues developing the franchise will ultimately tell us how important Way of the Sword becomes within the company’s wider portfolio.

But revivals rarely get a much clearer opening signal than this.

More than 20 years after the last completely new instalment, Onimusha has returned, sold more than one million copies in a single day and carried the entire series through another major lifetime-sales milestone.

Tech Torque Verdict

Capcom took a calculated risk by bringing Onimusha back as a fully fledged new release rather than relying solely on the series’ history.

The first numbers suggest that decision has paid off.

Winning two Gamescom awards gave Way of the Sword strong momentum heading into launch, but one million-plus sales on day one is the far more meaningful verdict. It shows players have not simply remembered Onimusha — a substantial number were ready to buy a new one.

For Capcom, that makes this more than a successful launch. It is early evidence that returning to some of its dormant franchises can still make commercial sense.
