UK 80mph Motorway Speed Limit Proposal Returns – What It Means for EV Drivers

An 80mph UK motorway limit has been proposed again. Here is what it could mean for EV range, journey times, safety and running costs.

A proposal to increase Britain’s motorway speed limit from 70mph to 80mph has returned to the political agenda—but drivers should not expect the signs to change anytime soon.

Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain renewed its support for an 80mph motorway limit on 18 August, arguing that modern vehicles are safer and better equipped than those on the road when the existing restriction was introduced.

The proposal has generated headlines suggesting UK motorways could receive higher limits. However, it is important to distinguish a political pledge from government policy.

There is currently no confirmed Department for Transport consultation or approved change. The legal motorway limit for cars remains 70mph.

Who is proposing the 80mph motorway limit?

Restore Britain says a future government led by the movement would implement an 80mph limit, describing the current rules as outdated.

Its argument centres on advances in vehicle technology, including stronger braking performance, improved tyres, stability control, automatic emergency braking and more sophisticated driver-assistance systems.

Britain has considered the same change before. In 2011, the government announced its intention to consult on increasing the motorway limit to 80mph, with ministers arguing that modern vehicles and potential journey-time savings justified another look at the rule.

That proposal was never implemented.

More recently, a Parliamentary petition calling for an 80mph limit closed in March 2026 with 2,883 signatures—well below the 10,000 required for a formal government response.

How much time would 80mph actually save?

The theoretical saving is smaller than the difference between 70mph and 80mph might suggest.

Covering 100 uninterrupted motorway miles would take approximately:

  • 86 minutes at a constant 70mph
  • 75 minutes at a constant 80mph

That represents a maximum theoretical saving of just under 11 minutes.

Real journeys would save less because traffic, roadworks, junctions, lower variable limits and congestion prevent drivers from maintaining the maximum speed throughout an entire route.

An increased limit could benefit certain long-distance journeys during quiet conditions, but it would not turn a congested motorway into a faster one.

An 80mph limit would reduce EV efficiency

Electric vehicles may be capable of travelling comfortably at 80mph, but doing so places a significantly greater demand on the battery.

Aerodynamic drag increases with the square of speed. Moving from 70mph to 80mph therefore produces approximately 31% more aerodynamic drag, although that does not translate directly into 31% greater total energy consumption because rolling resistance, drivetrain losses and auxiliary systems also contribute.

The practical result is still a noticeable reduction in range. It is one reason an EV’s estimated range can fall quickly after joining a motorway.

Modelling published by fleet-data specialist Geotab used the example of a 65kWh electric van travelling in warm conditions. Its predicted range fell from 103 miles at 70mph to 88 miles at 80mph—a reduction of around 15%.

The exact effect varies between vehicles. A low, aerodynamic electric saloon will generally cope better than a tall SUV or van, while wind, temperature, tyres and vehicle load can also change the result.

Nevertheless, EV drivers choosing to cruise at 80mph would need to expect higher electricity consumption, shorter distances between charging stops and potentially greater reliance on expensive motorway rapid chargers.

Petrol and diesel drivers would also pay more

The efficiency penalty is not unique to electric cars.

Petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles must also overcome greater aerodynamic resistance at higher speeds, increasing fuel consumption and emissions.

An 80mph limit could therefore reduce journey times under ideal conditions while increasing the cost of completing those journeys. For EV owners who mainly benefit from inexpensive home charging, an extra motorway rapid-charging stop could change the economics considerably.

Modern safety technology cannot change physics

Modern cars are substantially safer than vehicles from the 1960s, but improved technology cannot eliminate the physical consequences of higher speed.

A vehicle travelling at 80mph carries approximately 31% more kinetic energy than the same vehicle travelling at 70mph. That energy must be dissipated during braking or absorbed during a collision.

Automatic emergency braking, stability control and improved crash structures reduce risk, but higher speed still gives drivers less time to react and increases the potential severity of an impact.

The Highway Code currently quotes a typical overall stopping distance of 96 metres at 70mph. It provides no equivalent figure for 80mph because that speed remains above the national limit.

Any serious proposal would therefore require a fresh safety and environmental assessment rather than relying solely on improvements in vehicle design.

Could selected motorways support 80mph?

A blanket national increase would not be the only option.

If the policy were explored, selected sections of well-engineered motorway could potentially be assessed for higher limits during suitable weather and traffic conditions. Digital signs and variable-speed technology could then restore a lower limit when congestion, roadworks or poor weather increased the risk.

That would create a system closer to the variable limits already used on smart motorways, although enforcement technology and driver understanding would need to be reliable.

It would also leave major questions about whether older motorway infrastructure, closely spaced junctions and sections without a permanent hard shoulder were suitable for faster traffic.

Tech Torque Verdict

The renewed 80mph proposal is a genuine political pledge, but it is not an imminent change to UK road law.

Modern vehicles have stronger brakes, better tyres and far more advanced safety technology than those available when the 70mph limit was introduced. That makes a review understandable.

However, the potential benefit is modest: less than 11 minutes saved over 100 completely uninterrupted miles. Against that sit higher energy use, reduced EV range, increased fuel costs and greater collision energy.

For EV drivers in particular, 80mph would be a choice between arriving slightly sooner and stopping to charge sooner.

Until the government launches a formal review or consultation, 70mph remains the limit—and the suggestion that Britain’s motorways are about to change is considerably ahead of the evidence.
