After thousands of miles behind the wheel of my Peugeot E-3008, I’ve learned one important lesson: the dashboard’s estimated range is useful—but it isn’t the number I rely on when planning long journeys.
If you’ve driven an electric car for any length of time, you’ve probably experienced the same thing.
You leave home showing 260 miles of estimated range. Ten minutes later, after joining the motorway at 70mph, that figure has dropped by 20 or 30 miles.
Suddenly you’re questioning whether you’re going to make it.
Sound familiar?
Experienced EV drivers often jokingly refer to the remaining range display as the “Guess-o-Meter”, because it constantly adjusts based on your recent driving style, speed, terrain and weather conditions.
Over time, I’ve stopped paying much attention to the estimated mileage altogether.
Instead, I plan every long journey using one simple number…
Battery percentage.
Why Battery Percentage Is More Reliable
Think about your smartphone.
You don’t plan your day around how many minutes of screen time you have left—you simply glance at the battery percentage.
Your EV works in much the same way.
A battery showing 40% always has 40% of its available energy remaining, regardless of whether you’re cruising along a motorway, climbing steep hills or sitting in traffic.
The estimated mileage constantly changes because the car is trying to predict future energy consumption.
Your battery percentage doesn’t.
That’s why I find it far easier to plan long-distance journeys using State of Charge (SoC) instead of remaining miles.

My Long-Distance Charging Strategy
After plenty of motorway miles, I’ve settled on a simple routine that makes road trips far less stressful. Our EV charging and ownership hub brings together more practical advice for electric-car drivers.
🚗 Drive normally.
Enjoy the journey without constantly watching the remaining mileage.
🔋 Charge when the battery reaches around 30%.
This gives a comfortable safety margin.
If your chosen charging station is busy or unavailable, you still have enough battery to continue to another charger without unnecessary stress.
⚡ Rapid charge to around 80%.
Most EVs begin reducing rapid charging speeds significantly once the battery reaches around 80%.
Instead of waiting for that final 20%, it’s usually quicker to get back on the road and stop again later if necessary.
Why I Never Arrive Home on an Empty Battery
The final part of the journey is slightly different.
Rather than charging to 80% every time, I simply work out how much battery I need to get home comfortably.
My aim is to arrive on the driveway with around 20% State of Charge remaining.
That gives me:
- Plenty of reserve for unexpected diversions.
- A healthy battery buffer.
- The perfect starting point for overnight charging.
Let Your Home Charger Do the Hard Work
One of the biggest advantages of owning an EV comes after you’ve arrived home.
Rather than paying premium prices at motorway services trying to fill the battery to 100%, I simply plug the car in and let my home EV charging setup and tariff take over.

Why This Approach Works
One of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started driving electric was paying too much attention to the remaining mileage estimate.
Every hill…
Every headwind…
Every motorway section…
…caused the predicted range to jump around.
Once I switched my focus to battery percentage instead, everything became much easier.
Charging stops became more predictable.
Journey planning became less stressful.
And range anxiety almost disappeared.

The dashboard’s estimated range is exactly that—an estimate.
It changes constantly because your driving conditions change constantly.
Battery percentage tells a much more consistent story.
After thousands of miles in my Peugeot E-3008, I’ve learned that planning journeys around State of Charge, charging between roughly 30% and 80%, and arriving home with around 20% remaining is a far more relaxed and efficient way to travel.
Sometimes the smartest technology isn’t learning a new feature.
It’s learning which number to trust.
