RuneScape: Dragonwilds will join Xbox Game Pass when it launches worldwide on 15 September, bringing Jagex’s survival RPG to Xbox Series X and Series S on day one.

The confirmation means subscribers will be able to enter the world of Ashenfall without buying the game separately, although Jagex has not yet provided a detailed breakdown of which Game Pass catalogue tiers will include it.

The release also represents an important moment for the wider franchise. After 25 years of RuneScape, Dragonwilds will help bring the series to consoles for the first time.

Dragonwilds arrives on Game Pass on 15 September

Jagex confirmed the Game Pass release on 19 August, saying Xbox subscribers will be able to begin exploring Ashenfall when Dragonwilds launches on 15 September.

The game will leave Steam Early Access on the same day and reach its full 1.0 release across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. A Nintendo Switch 2 version has also been announced for September.

Dragonwilds originally entered Steam Early Access in April 2025. According to Jagex’s full-release announcement, it passed one million sales during that period, giving the developer a substantial player base from which to build its console launch.

This is not a traditional RuneScape MMO

Despite sharing its setting, characters and progression ideas with RuneScape, Dragonwilds is not a conventional massively multiplayer online game.

Instead, it is an open-world survival RPG with crafting, construction, exploration and co-operative play for up to four people.

Players begin as ordinary adventurers on Ashenfall, a previously unexplored continent within the world of Gielinor. Dragons have awakened across the region, leaving players to gather resources, build settlements, improve their skills and prepare for increasingly dangerous encounters.

Familiar RuneScape ideas remain part of the experience. Skills can be developed towards level 99, while enemies include Black Knights, Zogres, Kalphites and several varieties of dragon.

Magic also plays a practical role in survival. Spells can be used to fell trees, mine ore, catch fish, escape danger and support players during combat rather than existing solely as offensive abilities.

A significant addition for Xbox Game Pass

Dragonwilds joins Game Pass at an important stage in its development.

This is not the unfinished Early Access build first released on Steam. The September version will be the full launch, incorporating the updates and community feedback gathered throughout Early Access.

Jagex says the 1.0 release will include the Scorned Wilderness update alongside the content introduced through the Umbral Sands expansion.

For Game Pass, it adds a substantial co-operative survival game with an established audience and one of gaming’s most recognisable fantasy settings.

It follows Microsoft’s recently announced Xbox Game Pass August Wave 2 line-up, which includes Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and several other additions.

Day-one releases remain one of the subscription’s biggest strengths. Tech Torque Media’s wider assessment of whether Xbox Game Pass is still worth it examines how those launches affect its overall value.

Xbox Play Anywhere and cross-platform co-op confirmed

The Microsoft Store listing confirms support for Xbox Play Anywhere, Xbox cloud saves and cross-platform co-operative play.

Xbox Play Anywhere should allow players to move between compatible Xbox consoles and Windows PCs while retaining their progress and achievements.

The listing also advertises:

  • Single-player and two-to-four-player online co-op
  • 4K Ultra HD and HDR10
  • Variable Refresh Rate
  • Ray tracing
  • 60fps or higher
  • Spatial audio
  • Keyboard and mouse support on console
  • Xbox achievements and cloud saves

Dragonwilds will be available on Xbox Series X and Series S but not as a native Xbox One release.

The capabilities should make it an interesting new showcase for players still deciding whether the Xbox Series X remains worth buying.

Game Pass tier details still need clarifying

Jagex’s announcement refers broadly to Xbox Game Pass holders but does not specify the exact catalogue tier required to access the game.

The Microsoft Store separately states that online console multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. That requirement relates to online play and does not by itself confirm which tiers will include the game licence.

Microsoft or Jagex should provide clearer tier information before September’s launch. Players intending to use Game Pass should therefore check the final store listing before release.

Tech Torque Verdict

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a strong addition to Xbox Game Pass and a significant step for a franchise that has traditionally remained closely associated with PC.

Its combination of familiar RuneScape progression, open-world survival, construction, magic and four-player co-op gives it the potential to appeal beyond the existing RuneScape community.

Arriving through Game Pass on the same day as the full 1.0 release should also remove one of the biggest barriers to attracting a new console audience.

If Jagex can translate Dragonwilds successfully to Xbox controls and maintain the momentum generated during Early Access, Ashenfall could become one of September’s busiest new co-operative worlds.
