Apple TV 4K can now be configured to send audio to four HomePods at once in current software testing, but anyone expecting a finished wireless surround-sound system should temper expectations.
Testing reported by FlatpanelsHD and subsequently detailed by 9to5Mac shows an Apple TV 4K running tvOS 27.2 beta 2 sending audio to two pairs of HomePods — four speakers in total.
The important catch is that this is not yet true front-and-rear surround sound. The current implementation does not let users assign dedicated front and rear roles to the two HomePod pairs, so the additional speakers are not yet behaving as discrete rear channels.
What works with four HomePods right now?
According to the testing, the four-speaker arrangement can play Dolby Atmos and surround-sound material from video sources through all four HomePods. That is already a notable step beyond Apple’s officially documented HomePod home-cinema setup.
However, the current behaviour remains inconsistent across different types of audio. Menu and game sound is reported to remain on the front pair, while films and television with supported surround formats can use all four speakers.
More importantly, the rear pair is not yet receiving properly assigned rear-channel information. Without front/rear role assignment, four speakers do not automatically become a conventional surround system.
Apple still officially documents one HomePod or a stereo pair
Apple’s own HomePod support documentation currently describes Apple TV 4K home-cinema audio using a single HomePod or two HomePods configured as a stereo pair. A stereo pair can reproduce Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 content, while HomePod mini renders those formats in mono or stereo rather than Dolby surround.
That means the four-HomePod behaviour should still be treated as an experimental or developing capability rather than something Apple has formally announced as a supported home-cinema feature.
Apple released tvOS 27.2 beta 2 on 21 September, but the company has not announced a public four-speaker surround mode, compatibility list or launch date.
The bigger clue is what Apple appears to be building
This latest test follows earlier code references in HomePod software that pointed towards a much more complete four-speaker system. Those references included separate front-left, front-right, rear-left and rear-right positions, alongside room calibration, speaker mapping, timing adjustment, bass management and dialogue processing.
If Apple eventually exposes those controls to users, it would turn HomePod from a stereo-pair alternative into something much closer to a modular wireless home-cinema platform.
That would also address one of the biggest limitations of the current Apple TV/HomePod combination. HomePods can already produce an impressively large virtual soundstage from the front of the room, but there is no officially supported way to place dedicated wireless surrounds behind the listener.
Don’t buy two more HomePods for surround sound yet
For existing Apple TV 4K owners, this development is interesting rather than immediately actionable. Beta behaviour can change, Apple has not confirmed that the feature will ship in its current form, and the final hardware requirements are still unknown.
So if you already use a HomePod stereo pair, there is no strong reason to buy another two speakers purely in anticipation of a future surround mode. The sensible approach is to wait until Apple documents exactly which HomePods are supported and whether proper rear-channel assignment becomes available.

Four HomePods working from one Apple TV 4K is a meaningful sign that Apple’s home-cinema ambitions are expanding, but the distinction between four speakers and true surround sound matters.
Right now, the extra pair cannot be assigned as dedicated rear channels, so this remains a work in progress rather than a finished wireless alternative to a conventional surround system. If Apple completes the speaker mapping already hinted at in its software, though, HomePod could become a far more serious home-cinema option.
