Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw return for six episodes on Netflix UK, with new threats for Helen, Sam and Downing Street.
Helen Webb’s husband is heading for Downing Street. She is still selling Britain’s secrets to a private spy network. Keeping those two lives apart was tricky enough when Wallace was a government minister. Becoming the prime minister’s wife won’t make it any easier.
Black Doves Season 2 arrived on Netflix on Thursday 5 November 2026, with Keira Knightley back as Helen and Ben Whishaw returning as her friend Sam Young. Their first outing left plenty of loose ends. Six new episodes give them more than enough trouble to get on with.
All six episodes are on Netflix UK
The whole second season is available now. Netflix released all six episodes in the UK on 5 November, rather than putting them out weekly. You can find them on the Netflix series page; a subscription is required.
Season 1 arrived in December 2024. It introduced Helen as a politician’s wife and mother who secretly works for the Black Doves, an organisation that plants people close to power and sells the intelligence they collect. When someone close to Helen was murdered, her handler brought in Sam, an old friend with a less-than-respectable line of work.
It’s worth revisiting the first-season finale if the details have faded. The relationships matter here, especially the one between Helen and Sam. They know each other’s worst decisions and, against all sensible advice, keep turning up for one another.
Helen and Sam are back in trouble
Helen hasn’t stopped handing over state secrets. With her husband Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan) close to becoming prime minister, she has access that makes her hugely valuable to the Black Doves. It also puts her family and her cover in a more exposed position.
Sam, meanwhile, has fallen a long way from his days as a well-paid hitman. Netflix’s official release guide finds him drinking alone in Soho and taking low-rate jobs. He is still Helen’s closest ally, even if looking after her usually ends badly for his own peace of mind.
The reason they are pulled back together is Mrs Reed, Helen’s handler. Sarah Lancashire returns as the woman who always seems to be keeping several cards hidden. A plot to undermine Reed’s place within the organisation sends Helen and Sam searching for answers. This time, some of the people they have to worry about work for the same side.
Downing Street changes everything
Wallace’s political rise is more than a new address for the Webb family. Helen could find herself closer than ever to the government’s most sensitive conversations, while secretly passing information to people with no loyalty to Britain. The closer she gets to power, the harder it becomes to disappear whenever an assignment calls.
The second season also looks further inside the Black Doves themselves. Handlers, senior figures and the organisation’s own rules move into the foreground. That’s a useful complication: Helen may be very good at keeping secrets, but she cannot protect her family if she doesn’t know which of her colleagues to trust.
Those are the stakes Netflix has set out, not a promise that every twist will land. The series has always been happy to stretch plausibility when a good argument or a gunfight comes along.
Which actors are returning?
Knightley and Whishaw lead the cast again, alongside Lancashire as Mrs Reed and Buchan as Wallace. Kathryn Hunter returns as Lenny Lines, whose dealings with Sam rarely leave room for sentiment.
Ella Lily Hyland and Gabrielle Creevy reprise Williams and Eleanor, with Agnes O’Casey back as Dani and Molly Chesworth returning as Marie. Their return means the new season doesn’t have to spend its time introducing an entirely different criminal world.
Who joins the cast in Season 2?
Seven newcomers have been announced. Netflix’s cast guide gives some of them a clear place in the story while keeping others under wraps.
- Ambika Mod plays Laila, a sharp-tongued Black Doves operative sent to help Helen.
- Babou Ceesay plays Mr Conteh, a senior Black Doves figure with motives that deserve a closer look.
- Sam Riley plays Patrick, a mysterious contact who offers Sam a possible way out.
- Neve Campbell plays Cecile Mason, a US defence envoy.
- Sylvia Hoeks joins as Katia Chernov.
- Goran Kostic plays Alexi Chernov.
- Samuel Barnett plays Jerry.
There is no need to guess where all those loyalties lie. That is part of what the episodes are there to reveal.
Who created and directed the new season?
Joe Barton returns as creator, writer and executive producer, keeping the same voice behind the series. Julian Farino, whose credits include Giri/Haji and Amadeus, directs alongside Kieron Hawkes, known for Red Eye and Fortitude.
The action remains rooted in London, but filming also took place in Paris and parts of Italy. The international locations give Helen and Sam more ground to cover without losing the political setting that makes their predicament interesting.

The Season 2 trailer on YouTube shows the returning pair facing new threats and introduces several of the fresh cast. Netflix also hosts the trailer in its official Tudum preview. Anyone who likes to go into a thriller knowing as little as possible can safely skip the footage.
What do the first reviews say?
Netflix describes the return as a darkly funny, explosive spy thriller. That’s the company’s pitch. Critics who have watched the episodes are more interested in what the cast makes of the mayhem.
The Guardian’s review praises Knightley, Whishaw and Lancashire, while making no secret of the plot’s implausibility. TheWrap also enjoys the performances and dark humour, though it questions some of the twists and casting decisions. Those are independent critics’ views, not a Tech Torque Media screening verdict.
If you’re after a different sort of British spy series, our look at the future of Slow Horses on Apple TV covers the rather less glamorous world of Slough House. Both series lean on difficult friendships, but the tone is miles apart.
Tech Torque Verdict
Putting Helen so close to the prime minister’s office is a neat way to make an already dangerous double life worse. Sam still has his own mess to deal with, and Reed’s problems mean the Black Doves themselves may be as threatening as anyone outside the organisation.
The six episodes are ready to watch on Netflix UK. Whether Season 2 lives up to its premise needs a proper viewing review; this is a release guide, not a scored judgement on episodes we haven’t screened.
