Lewis Hamilton delivered everything the Silverstone crowd could have hoped for in the opening half of Saturday’s Formula 1 Sprint during our British Grand Prix 2026 coverage, but championship leader Kimi Antonelli once again demonstrated why he is the benchmark of the 2026 season.
After Hamilton converted Sprint Pole into the early lead, Antonelli remained within striking distance before making the decisive move on Lap 8. Once ahead, the Mercedes driver steadily pulled clear to secure his first Formula 1 Sprint victory, leaving Hamilton to settle for an impressive second place in front of his home fans.
Hamilton Makes the Perfect Start
Starting from pole position, Hamilton launched cleanly off the line and defended firmly into Abbey, keeping Antonelli behind through the opening sequence of corners.
Knowing that track position would be critical around Silverstone, Hamilton pushed hard during the opening laps while Antonelli chose patience over aggression, remaining comfortably inside DRS range without risking an early attack.
Behind the leading pair, the opening laps featured several intense midfield battles as drivers fought for valuable Sprint points, with Lando Norris quickly establishing himself in third place.
Antonelli Strikes on Lap Eight
The defining moment arrived on Lap 8.
After several laps applying pressure, Antonelli used the benefit of DRS to complete a clean overtake on Hamilton before Stowe Corner. From that point onwards, the Mercedes driver controlled the race superbly and gradually extended his advantage over the Ferrari.
Hamilton continued to push but was unable to close the gap as Antonelli crossed the finish line 2.745 seconds ahead to take maximum Sprint points.
Norris Completes the Podium
Lando Norris secured third place for McLaren after another composed drive, finishing ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes.
Charles Leclerc brought home fifth for Ferrari, while Max Verstappen endured a frustrating Sprint to finish sixth after initially running inside the leading group.
Oscar Piastri claimed seventh, with Liam Lawson taking the final points-paying position in eighth. Lawson remained under post-race investigation following an incident involving Isack Hadjar.
Tech Torque Analysis
While Hamilton’s opening laps were strong enough to keep Antonelli behind, Mercedes once again looked to have the quicker overall race package.
Antonelli never appeared rushed. Instead, he stayed close enough to attack once the opportunity arrived before managing the race from the front with impressive composure.
From our perspective, the Sprint also highlighted how difficult it remains to follow closely through Silverstone’s high-speed corners. Once Antonelli moved into clean air, he was able to manage the gap without coming under serious pressure from Hamilton.
With qualifying and Sunday’s Grand Prix still to come, Ferrari will be encouraged by Hamilton’s pace, but Mercedes once again demonstrated why they remain the benchmark over a race distance.
Tech Torque Verdict
Hamilton gave the home crowd plenty to cheer with a superb opening stint, but Antonelli once again showed the maturity of a championship leader.
The Mercedes driver combined patience, precision and race management to claim his first Sprint victory, strengthening his position at the top of the standings and sending another clear message ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix.
If Ferrari can qualify at the front later today, Hamilton will have another opportunity to fight for victory. But after the Sprint, Mercedes appear to have the slight edge over a race distance.
