Lucid and Bolt Plan 25,000-Strong Robotaxi Fleet Across Europe

Lucid and Bolt plan to deploy at least 25,000 Level 4 autonomous EVs across Europe, combining Lucid’s future Midsize platform with NVIDIA Hyperion.

Lucid’s forthcoming Midsize EV platform and NVIDIA Hyperion will underpin a planned Level 4 autonomous fleet that Bolt intends to own and operate, with 100,000 autonomous vehicles targeted on its platform by 2035.

Lucid and Bolt have announced plans to deploy at least 25,000 fully autonomous Lucid vehicles across multiple European cities and countries, putting serious scale behind their push into robotaxi services.

The vehicles will be based on Lucid’s forthcoming Midsize EV platform and developed for SAE Level 4 autonomous operation, with NVIDIA Hyperion providing the underlying autonomous-vehicle reference architecture.

Bolt plans to own and operate the fleet itself, while its dedicated Autonomous Driving Solutions division will work with Lucid from vehicle development through to commercial operation. The 25,000 vehicles also form part of Bolt’s much larger ambition to host 100,000 autonomous vehicles on its platform by 2035.

That scale is what makes the announcement significant. Europe already has a growing number of autonomous-vehicle programmes, but 25,000 vehicles would take this well beyond another limited-city technology trial if Lucid and Bolt can turn the agreement into operating fleets.

Lucid’s Midsize platform becomes a robotaxi base

Lucid and Bolt will jointly develop an autonomous-driving-system-ready version of Lucid’s upcoming Midsize architecture.

Rather than simply adding autonomous equipment to an existing production car, the companies say Bolt will be involved from the product-development stage, helping define vehicle, software, safety and passenger-experience requirements.

That gives Bolt considerably more input into the finished vehicle than a conventional ride-hailing company simply buying cars from a manufacturer.

Lucid, meanwhile, is putting a growing amount of emphasis on autonomy beyond its retail EV business. It already has a separate agreement with Uber covering at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles for a robotaxi programme involving Uber and Nuro, including both Gravity and future Midsize models.

For Lucid, the Midsize architecture is therefore becoming more than its route into a lower-priced consumer segment. It is also emerging as an important platform for the company’s autonomous-mobility plans.

NVIDIA Hyperion provides the autonomous foundation

The proposed European fleet will use NVIDIA Hyperion, NVIDIA’s production-ready reference platform for robotaxis and Level 4 autonomous vehicles.

Hyperion combines high-performance NVIDIA DRIVE computing with a standardised sensor architecture and autonomous-driving software environment. NVIDIA says the platform is designed to give manufacturers and autonomous-driving developers a common computing and sensor foundation for building Level 4 systems.

Bolt was already working with NVIDIA on autonomous-vehicle development before the Lucid agreement. This deal now gives that work a specific vehicle platform and a much clearer intended fleet scale.

What does Level 4 actually mean?

Level 4 autonomy is an important distinction here.

A Level 4 system can perform the entire driving task without a human driver needing to intervene, but only within the conditions and areas for which that system has been designed and approved.

That could mean particular cities, mapped operating zones, routes, weather conditions or other defined parameters. It does not mean the vehicle can automatically drive anywhere under every possible condition.

That operating-domain approach also fits with existing European regulation. EU rules covering fully automated vehicles already provide type-approval requirements for autonomous systems operating within predefined areas and on specified routes.

So while the technology is intended to support driverless operation, reaching Level 4 capability does not by itself give Lucid or Bolt permission to launch a commercial robotaxi service anywhere they choose.

Regulation may prove just as important as the technology

Lucid and Bolt say they intend to work with European regulators and policymakers as the programme develops. That will be crucial.

Bolt needs more than suitable vehicles and autonomous-driving software. It must also build the fleet infrastructure, operating systems and city partnerships required to run the service, while individual deployments will have to satisfy the rules of each market in which they operate.

No launch cities have been named in the announcement, and there is currently no confirmed UK deployment.

The Financial Times reports that services could begin as early as 2028, although Lucid and Bolt have not made that a formal deployment commitment.

That distinction matters. A 25,000-vehicle target makes for a striking number, but developing the vehicles, validating Level 4 operation and gaining approval city by city will determine how quickly the fleet actually appears on European roads.

Europe’s robotaxi market is starting to accelerate

This deal lands as autonomous ride-hailing moves increasingly from demonstration programmes towards commercial deployment.

We have already covered Uber and Wayve bringing robotaxis to London, while Tesla’s Cybercab has begun carrying passengers in Austin. China is also pushing towards much broader deployment of self-driving vehicles before the end of the decade.

Lucid and Bolt are approaching the same market from a different direction: a European mobility operator, a dedicated EV architecture and NVIDIA’s Level 4 technology platform brought together around one planned fleet.

The 25,000 figure grabs the attention, but the bigger story is the intent to build this as a commercial robotaxi fleet rather than another small autonomous-driving trial.

If Bolt can turn those planned vehicles into approved services across multiple European cities, the scale of autonomous ride-hailing on the continent will look very different.
