Uber and British autonomous-driving specialist Wayve have launched supervised autonomous rides in London, putting AI-driven electric vehicles into a public ride-hailing service on UK roads for the first time.
Autonomous taxis have moved another step beyond testing and demonstrations in Britain. From 3 September 2026, Londoners requesting an UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort can be matched with an all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E fitted with the Wayve AI Driver, at no additional cost.
The launch makes Wayve and Uber the first to offer autonomous ride-hailing trips to members of the public in the UK. It also turns London into a particularly demanding real-world proving ground for a technology that combines artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and autonomous driving.
How Uber’s autonomous London rides work
Uber says riders can be matched with a Wayve vehicle through the normal app when requesting an eligible ride. Customers are told when an autonomous vehicle has been assigned and can either accept it or switch to a conventional Uber before it arrives.
Once the car arrives, passengers can unlock it and start the trip through the Uber app. Interactive displays inside the vehicle show the planned route and driving path, with the interface available in 64 languages.
The initial vehicles are all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-Es equipped with Wayve’s AI Driver and surrounding sensors. Uber says the service can operate across London at launch, excluding airports, with the number of vehicles expected to grow gradually in line with demand, readiness and regulation.
More than 140,000 Londoners had already opted in to improve their chances of being matched with a Wayve vehicle before the public launch.
These robotaxis still have a driver
There is an important distinction between today’s launch and a genuinely driverless taxi service: the cars are operating as supervised autonomous vehicles.
A trained, Transport for London-licensed private-hire driver remains behind the wheel and oversees every journey. That person can intervene if required, so an empty driver’s seat is not yet carrying paying passengers around London.
The distinction matters because some coverage will naturally describe the vehicles as “driverless taxis” or robotaxis. The technology is doing the driving during autonomous operation, but the current service still retains human supervision.
The London Assembly Transport Committee said in August that the initial approval covers up to 15 vehicles on a trial basis for one year. At that stage, the committee stressed that the supervised operation should not be confused with consent for fully autonomous passenger service.
Are London’s autonomous taxis safe?
Safety is likely to determine how quickly Londoners accept the technology. The capital presents autonomous-driving systems with dense traffic, cyclists, pedestrians, buses, roadworks, narrow streets and the kind of unpredictable interactions that are difficult to reproduce in controlled testing.
Uber says any autonomous vehicle operating on its network must meet its safety guidelines, while the Wayve launch begins with the additional safeguard of the licensed driver onboard.
Public confidence is far from guaranteed. A YouGov survey commissioned by the London Assembly Transport Committee found that 42% of Londoners opposed the use of autonomous passenger vehicles in the capital, compared with 29% who supported them. Respondents were particularly concerned about how autonomous vehicles would handle unexpected situations, road danger and technical failures.

What is Wayve’s AV2.0 technology?
Wayve’s approach to self-driving is particularly interesting because it differs from the more traditional autonomous-vehicle architecture built around separate perception, prediction and planning systems.
The company describes AV2.0 as an end-to-end AI driving model. Instead of relying on traditional HD maps and large collections of hand-coded driving rules, Wayve trains a neural network on driving data so it can turn raw sensor information into driving decisions.
The launch vehicles use surrounding cameras and radar, while Wayve says its AV2.0 architecture is designed to work with different sensor configurations.
That vehicle-agnostic and map-light approach is central to Wayve’s pitch. If it can reliably generalise what it learns across different cars and cities, the company could potentially expand autonomous driving without recreating an entirely bespoke system for every location.

Why London is such an important test
London is not an easy environment in which to deploy autonomous vehicles. The capital combines complicated junctions, dense pedestrian activity, cyclists, buses, parked vehicles, roadworks and streets that were never designed around modern traffic.
Wayve has an advantage in that respect because the company was founded in London and has been developing and training its technology on the capital’s roads since 2018.
The move into an Uber service changes the nature of that work. Wayve is no longer simply demonstrating that its AI Driver can navigate London; paying passengers can now encounter the technology during an ordinary ride-hailing journey.
Uber and Wayve get to public rides before Waymo
The launch also puts Uber and Wayve ahead of Waymo in one important respect: they have reached public ride-hailing customers in London first.
Waymo is already testing its Jaguar I-PACE autonomous vehicles on London roads with trained specialists behind the wheel, but it is working towards a commercial service with no human behind the wheel.
That makes the comparison more nuanced than simply declaring a winner. Uber and Wayve are first to make supervised autonomous rides available through a mainstream London ride-hailing platform, while Waymo’s stated goal is a fully autonomous passenger service.
If both programmes progress, London could become one of Europe’s most important real-world battlegrounds for different approaches to autonomous mobility.
What happens next?
The small initial fleet means autonomous Ubers will remain unusual on London’s roads for now. But the significance of the launch is larger than the number of cars involved.
Wayve gets real-world passenger-service experience, Uber can measure how customers respond to autonomous rides, and regulators can observe how the technology performs alongside conventional traffic.
The next major milestone is obvious: removing the supervising driver. That will require a higher level of technical confidence and regulatory approval, and it will raise the stakes considerably for passenger safety, public trust and accountability.
Tech Torque Verdict
This is a more meaningful moment for UK autonomous driving than another prototype demonstration.
Londoners can now request an ordinary Uber and potentially see an electric Ford Mustang Mach-E arrive with an AI system handling the driving. The safety driver means Britain has not reached genuinely driverless robotaxis yet, and that distinction should stay clear in the coverage.
Even so, moving Wayve’s technology into a live passenger service represents a genuine transition from development towards deployment. How safely the cars deal with London’s messy, unpredictable reality — and whether passengers learn to trust them — will now matter as much as the technology itself.
