Xbox will publish Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT after PlayStation Studios ended its collaboration with Kojima Productions, giving the action-espionage project a new home and expanding Xbox’s relationship with the studio beyond OD.

Xbox has officially confirmed that it will publish PHYSINT, Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage project, after PlayStation Studios stepped away from the game.

The deal keeps PHYSINT in development and gives Kojima Productions a new publishing partner as Kojima returns to the espionage genre.

Xbox is now PHYSINT’s publisher

Xbox says the deal expands its existing relationship with Kojima Productions beyond OD, the studio’s other project being developed with Xbox. Kojima Productions has also confirmed Xbox as its new partner for PHYSINT and says development is continuing.

For Xbox, it is a notable addition to a relationship that was already significant. OD gave Microsoft a direct connection with Kojima Productions, but PHYSINT is a different proposition: it is the project most obviously connected to the kind of action-espionage games that made Kojima one of the industry’s best-known creators.

PlayStation stepped away after originally announcing PHYSINT

PHYSINT was first announced in 2024 as a collaboration between Kojima Productions and PlayStation. At the time, the project was presented as a new action-espionage game intended to blur the line between games and film.

PlayStation’s original PHYSINT announcement from State of Play in January 2024.

That makes the change particularly striking. In a statement posted on X, PlayStation Studios said it had made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT, while stressing that its wider relationship with Kojima remains strong.

Kojima gave more detail on the timing in his own statement on X. He said Kojima Productions was unexpectedly informed in mid-June that PlayStation Studios would cancel the PHYSINT project. The studio then spent roughly three months looking for a new partner before reaching an agreement with Xbox.

Neither side has explained why PlayStation chose to end its involvement, so there is little value in guessing. What is confirmed is that PlayStation is no longer collaborating on the game and Xbox will now publish it.

The Kojima and Xbox relationship now goes well beyond OD

Until now, Xbox’s headline Kojima project was OD, the horror project being developed by Kojima Productions with Xbox Game Studios.

PHYSINT broadens that partnership substantially. Xbox’s announcement also says the two companies plan to collaborate across film and television, suggesting the relationship is being built around more than a pair of individual games.

That fits with the wider direction Xbox has been taking as it reshapes its publishing and platform strategy. We have already looked at how Xbox is talking about exclusivity and where its games appear, while Microsoft has also been increasingly open about its plans for the next generation of Xbox hardware and devices.

Adding PHYSINT gives Xbox another high-profile creative partnership at a time when it is trying to define what the next phase of the brand looks like.

What do we actually know about PHYSINT?

For all the attention around the publishing switch, PHYSINT itself remains deliberately mysterious.

  • It is an original action-espionage project from Kojima Productions.
  • Hideo Kojima says development is continuing.
  • Xbox will publish the game.
  • The Xbox partnership expands beyond the studio’s existing work on OD.
  • No release date has been announced.
  • Xbox and Kojima Productions have not yet confirmed the game’s platforms.

That last point is important. Xbox becoming the publisher does not, by itself, confirm that PHYSINT will be exclusive to Xbox hardware. Until Microsoft or Kojima Productions announces platforms, anything beyond the publishing arrangement is speculation.

Why this is such a significant Xbox move

Publishing announcements happen all the time. This one carries more weight because of where PHYSINT started and who is making it.

The game was publicly introduced through PlayStation, with Sony backing the project as Kojima returned to the action-espionage genre. Two years later, PlayStation has stepped away and Xbox has taken over as publisher.

For players, the positive news is simple: PHYSINT is still moving forward. For Xbox, it is a major creative addition and another sign that its relationship with Kojima Productions is becoming much deeper than the original OD agreement.

Tech Torque Verdict

This is a genuine platform story rather than a routine publisher announcement. PHYSINT began life as a high-profile PlayStation collaboration and is now being published by Xbox, with Kojima Productions making clear that the project survived because it found a new partner.

The unanswered question is what Xbox publishing means for platforms. Until that is confirmed, the sensible approach is to separate what we know from what people will inevitably speculate about. What we do know is that PHYSINT is alive, Xbox is publishing it, and Microsoft’s partnership with Kojima Productions just became considerably more important.
