The Final Fantasy VII Revelation release date is now confirmed for 8 April 2027, with Square Enix using today’s PlayStation State of Play to reveal a substantial new gameplay presentation showing how the final chapter of the remake trilogy is expanding exploration, combat and character choice.
The date replaces the broader spring 2027 window Square Enix had previously attached to the game and gives one of next year’s biggest releases a firm place on the calendar. Today’s presentation also went considerably further than another cinematic trailer, with new detail on the Highwind, chocobo companion Piko, the FITS combat system, instant party switching, quest choices and the return of Queen’s Blood.
PlayStation had already confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation would close the 3 September State of Play with an extended look at the game, something we highlighted in our State of Play preview. The broadcast has now delivered the announcement that mattered most: a release date.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation release date confirmed for 8 April 2027
According to the official PlayStation Blog announcement, Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on PlayStation 5 on 8 April 2027.
Square Enix’s official release-date trailer confirms the same 8 April 2027 launch date for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, making Revelation a simultaneous multi-platform release during the original game’s 30th anniversary year.
That makes today’s date reveal much more significant than a routine trailer drop. Revelation now sits just one day after Exodus, which is currently scheduled for 7 April 2027, making the opening stretch of April increasingly crowded for major releases.
The Highwind opens up a much larger world
The Highwind remains central to Revelation’s approach to exploration. Square Enix says players will be able to use the iconic airship to move across a vast open world, extending the scale of travel beyond what Final Fantasy VII Rebirth offered.
We had already seen the Highwind during Gamescom, where Square Enix also showed the enormous Weapons and kept the game on a spring 2027 release window. Our Gamescom 2026 roundup covered that earlier appearance, but today’s State of Play adds much more detail to how players will actually move through the world.
Piko also returns as Cloud’s chocobo companion, but this time the bird has a larger role. Piko can act as both a mount and a combat ally, growing stronger alongside the party and gaining new abilities for traversal and battle.
FITS expands the combat system
Combat is being expanded through the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear system, or FITS. The system lets characters equip specialised outfits that change both their appearance and combat role.
- Warrior
- Knight
- Black Mage
- Summoner
Each FITS class brings its own move set and tactical purpose, meaning the system is not simply cosmetic. Square Enix showed Cid using the Knight FITS and Vincent wearing the Summoner variant during the extended gameplay presentation.
That fits Revelation’s broader direction. Rather than discarding the action-and-command combat built through Remake and Rebirth, Square Enix appears to be layering more party customisation on top of it.
Instant party switching and new traversal options
Revelation will also introduce dynamic character switching during exploration. Players will be able to move instantly between party members while travelling through the world rather than being locked to one character outside combat.
A new grappling gun adds another traversal option, allowing characters to scale rooftops and move vertically through selected environments. Certain quests will also let players choose which party member takes part, with Square Enix saying those decisions can alter specific story moments and gameplay scenarios.
That could prove particularly important in a final chapter that has to bring together a large cast while resolving the trilogy’s major storylines. Giving players more control over who accompanies them should help Revelation make better use of the full party rather than leaving key characters on the sidelines for long stretches.
Queen’s Blood returns with a Red XIII storyline
Queen’s Blood is also returning after becoming one of Rebirth’s most memorable side activities.
This time the card game will feature a substantial new storyline centred on Red XIII, along with new opponents and rule changes designed to disrupt established strategies. Square Enix says some opponents will be capable of dramatically changing the flow of matches, giving experienced players fresh challenges rather than simply repeating Rebirth’s progression.
Premium Editions include early access and story DLC
Square Enix also used the announcement to detail the first premium editions and pre-order bonuses.
The Premium Edition includes the main game, a Story Expansion Pass and 24-hour early access, alongside an in-game accessory and consumable items. Square Enix says the Story Expansion Pass will contain two story-focused DLC releases, although details of those expansions will come later.
A Premium Plus Edition adds a digital art book, mini soundtrack, additional Summon Materia, armour and accessories. PlayStation pre-orders also include Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia.
A firm date makes Revelation feel much closer
Final Fantasy VII Revelation has always carried enormous expectations because it has to conclude not only the remake trilogy but one of gaming’s most closely watched reinterpretations.
Today’s State of Play makes the project feel considerably more concrete. The Highwind, expanded world exploration and Weapons were already known, but the combination of a firm release date, deeper traversal systems, FITS customisation, party-choice mechanics and the expanded Queen’s Blood campaign gives a much clearer picture of how Square Enix intends to make the third game feel distinct.
Tech Torque Verdict
The 8 April 2027 release date is the headline, but the more interesting part of today’s reveal is how much Revelation appears to be expanding the systems established by Rebirth rather than simply carrying them forward.
The Highwind gives Square Enix room to make exploration genuinely planetary in scale, while FITS, instant character switching and party-specific quest choices suggest the final chapter will put more emphasis on using the entire cast. Add the return of Queen’s Blood and two planned story expansions, and Revelation is beginning to look appropriately ambitious for the conclusion of the trilogy.
With the date now locked, the next question is how much more Square Enix reveals before April — and whether the final chapter can bring this enormous project to a satisfying close.
